Historical origins of the in-line four-cylinder engine

In 1894, Maybach, together with Paul Daimler, completed the development of an inline four-cylinder engine, with a cast block and carburetor technology patented by Maybach in 893, which was to be found in almost all the finest automobiles of the world at the end of the 19th century. This achievement was accomplished shortly after Maybach and Daimler had been sidelined from the company. Get L4 Cylinder Engine

Historical origins of turbocharging technology

The 1905 patent granted to Swiss engineer Alfred Beech, who worked for Sulzer, is often credited with the birth of the turbocharger. It was initially used primarily in the engines of airplanes and tanks.

The first commercial application of the turbocharger was in June 1924, when the first heavy-duty turbocharger (type VT402) was delivered under Alfred Beech's supervision from the Brown, Boveri & Co. plant in Baden to the Swiss locomotive and machinery factory SLM in Winterthur.

In the 1930s, the Swiss truck manufacturing company Saurer made the first application of turbocharging technology to trucks.

In the 1950s, automakers began working on turbocharged engines but were unable to solve the problems of “turbo lag” and bulky turbochargers. The first turbocharged cars were the short-lived Chevrolet Corvair Monza and the Oldsmobile Jetfire, both introduced in 1962.

In the 1980s, passenger cars began to incorporate turbocharging more often to improve the performance of small-displacement engines.
